The
sense of revitalization and renewal that comes with spring is
re-energizing the group at Renaissance Spa. They are eager to show us
how to metamorphose out of our winter-weary shell and slough off the old
skin. It's time to massage the toxins out and refresh the body, to
indulge in the sense of touch and the relaxation that comes from gentle
and deep manipulation of the muscles. 'During the winter, we don't
spend much time outside, and there is a build up of toxins in the
skin," says Monique Rytel, who, along with Natalya Ostapenka, is one
of the owners of the spa. Now is the time to prepare the body for the
changing season with the seaweed detoxifying treatment or Dead Sea Mud
wrap. For the uninitiated and perhaps less sophisticated among us, a
visit to the spa will be an enlightenment and education in how we need
to care for the largest and most neglected organ, the skin.
It's like a little United Nations in this light and effervescent atmosphere,
buzzing with people coming and going for manicures, pedicures, facials,
makeup and body treatments against a cacophony of exotic foreign
accents. The mostly European-trained aestheticians eagerly share their
knowledge of facial and body treatments designed to make the skin glow
and body feel revitalized. There is a positive energy level here that
you experience; an environment where everyone loves their work. This is
evident looking at Mila, who with 15 years experience, once worked in
the finest spa in Moscow. "She has a 100 percent return clientele,"
notes Natasha. A practiced touch and experience gleaned from half a
world away have taught her what's best for her clientele.
The age-old technique and practice of massage therapy satisfies a
multiplicity of needs, from healing and relaxing muscle tension to
promoting a sense of well-being. Nikki, the massage therapist,
energizes, as she waxes poetic about the benefits of massage. "It is
not a luxury," she insists, "It is a necessity for everyone."
Lifting her arms she enthuses, "You feel like you are flying, you feel
so light, and your mind is so much lighter." She talks while her hands
are kneading imaginary muscles as she explains the importance of massage
in today's over-stressed society. Reflecting on having interrupted a
career in psychology to become a massage therapist, Nikki understands
it's all about how you feel about yourself. After getting her first
massage, she knew she had to share the experience.
Experience, enthusiasm and energy are evident everywhere in this little European
Mecca where care is taken to welcome at the moment the door is opened
and you are pulled in by a smile. There is an immediate sense of
envelopment into an energetic milieu. Something is about to change. The
rest is renaissance.
